STOCK PHOTOGRAPH PORTFOLIO

THINGS, 2019 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA

These are photographs of the seven Stage 2019 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA Professional Bicycle Race. This was the Tour's fourteenth edition with nineteen racing Teams, each with seven riders except for Bahrain Merida which had only six riders. This year there was no Time Trial, all of the Stages were Road Races and it was overall the hardest course raced in the Tour with stages that climbed to South Lake Tahoe and Mount Baldy finishes and over Mount Hamilton midway through a Stage. The Women's Tour overlapped the Men's Tour this year with the three Stage Women's Tour happening on the last three days of the Men's Tour at basically the same locations, but all of these photographs are the Men's Tour.

At the bottom of these photographs are links to the collections from the 2008 through 2018 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA races.

If you would like to investigate purchasing rights to any of these photographs, the instructions you need are on the main STOCK page linked to below. There are many more photographs of the Men's Tour available, due to time constraints only a few of the best are presented here. If you would like another photo of the race, racers or teams just ask and I can see if I have a photograph that covers your interest.

RANCHO CORDOVA
TO SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

Stage 2 went from Rancho Cordova, near Sacramento, up to the Heavenly Valley sky area in South Lake Tahoe. The course wound it's way through the Sierra Nevadas for a length of 133.3 miles, 214.5 km, and a total elevation gain of 14,522 feet, 4,426 meters, the most climbing of any stage. The stage had two intermediate point Sprints and three intermediate King of the Mountain point summits. No racer dropped out of the race on this Stage, but the difficulty caused a gap of over 47 minutes from the winner to the last man over the finish.

STAGE 4
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY
TO MORRO BAY

Stage 4 went from Monterey, at the Laguna Seca raceway, down Highway 1 to Morro Bay. It was the same length as Stage 2, 133.3 miles, 214.5 km. There were two intermediate points Sprints, one about 24 miles, 39 km, into the race before it entered the Big Sur area and one just before Cayucos, about 31 miles, 50 km, before the finish. While there were no mountains that were climbed, Highway 1 from the start to just past Ragged Point (about 90 miles, 144 km into the route) is essentially rolling hills, either climbing or decending, so the three toughest climbs were selected for King of the Mountain points. The Stage was won by Fabio Jakobsen, Deceuninck - Quick-Step, with a time of 5 hours 53 minutes and 22 seconds, an average speed of 22.8MPH, 36.4KPH. There was one major crash just about 3 km from the finish and all of the racers were able to finish the race and given the field time, but Tejay Van Garderen, EF Education First, was one of the parties involved and while he was able to retain the overall lead it appears that the crash affected him so that on Stage 6 he was unable to perform well enough to stay in the overall lead.

STAGE 5
PISMO BEACH TO VENTURA

This was the longest Stage of the 2019 Tour. Starting in Pismo Beach and working its way though the coastal mountains it was 136.4 miles, 219.5 km, to the finish in Ventura. There were two intermediate points Sprints, one in Orcutt and one in Ventura, and five King of the Mountain summits, two on Foxen Canyon Road, one at San Marcos Pass and then two more on Casitas Pass Road. There was a 30-40MPH, 48-64KPH, wind blowing south down the coast that day which resulted in the race lasting just 4 hours 56 minutes and 11 seconds, almost one hour faster than the expected time, with an average speed of 27.8MPH, 44.5KPH. Cortina Ivan Garcia, Bahrain - Merida won the stage in a fast finish.

STAGE 6
ONTARIO TO MOUNT BALDY

The 2019 edition of the Tour returned to Mount Baldy, a climb that has always had a major impact on the race. The course was 79.2 miles, 127.5 kms, long with a total of 14,040 feet, 4,279 meters, of climbing. The last 4.5 mile, 7.2 km, climb was a steep 9.4% average grade with the last .5 mile, .8 km, to the finish at 12.8%. The course broke the Peloton apart into several groups of racers and, as usual, the winner of this Stage secured the win of the Tour. Tadej Pogacar, UAE Team Emirates, who had held the Best Young Rider Jersey through the previous Stages, managed to outdo all his competitors on the final climb winning the Stage and moving from fourth place overall into the lead. Tejay Van Garderen, while at the front of the first group of racers behind a three-man breakaway at the start of the final climb, was unable to hold his prevoius form and finished the Stage 1 minute 28 seconds behind Tadej, falling to 9th place overall.
