THINGS, 2018 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA

These are photographs of the seven Stage 2018 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA Professional Bicycle Race. This was the Tour's thirteenth edition with seventeen racing Teams, each with seven riders except for Team Lotto NL-Jumbo which had only six riders. The Women's Tour overlapped the Men's Tour this year with the Women's three Stage Tour happening on the last three days of the Men's Tour at basically the same locations. Most of these photographs are of the Men's Tour.

At the bottom of these photographs are links to the collections from the 2008 through 2017 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA races.

If you would like to investigate purchasing rights to any of these photographs, the instructions you need are on the main STOCK page linked to below. There are many more photographs of the Men's Tour available, due to time constraints only a few of the best are presented here. If you would like another photo of the race, racers or teams just ask and I can see if I have a photograph that covers your interest.

STAGE 1
LONG BEACH

Stage 1 of the Tour was a Criterium style race that happened in Long Beach along parts of the Long Beach Grand Prix Course. The Course was essentially flat so while there were two Sprint Point contests in addition to the Finish Sprint, there were no climbs so nothing to initiate the King of the Mountain competition.

The Course though Long Beach was about 7 miles, 11.2 KM, long, and the Stage made twelve laps of the Course with the total distace covered being 83.6 miles, 134.5 KM. Fernando Gaviria of the Quick-Step Floors Team won the Stage with a time of 3 hours, 2 minutes 23 seconds, an average speed of almost 28MPH, 45KPH. All of the racers finished the Course with none dropping out due to crashes or other mishaps.

STAGE 2
VENTURA TO
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Stage 2 was the Queen Stage of the Tour, the Stage deemed to be the hardest and most demanding. The Stage started at a Resort/leisure area beside the beach and Pier in Ventura, worked its way through the coastal mountains around Ventura and then headed to Santa Barbara finishing at the top of the hardest climb in the Tour on Gilbraltar Road, the climb that gave the Stage the Queen designation. The difficulty of the final climb broke up the Peloton and set up the lead racers for the fight for the win of the Tour over the remaining 5 stages.

STAGE 3
KING CITY TO
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY

Stage 3 from King City to Laguna Seca Raceway was the longest Stage of the Tour at 122.4 miles, 197 KM. The course first looped through the Diablo Range South-East of King City, then returned to the King City area and crossed the Salinas Valley through Greenfield before heading North to Laguna Seca through the Santa Lucia Range. The course had almost no flat sections as it went through rolling hills with the exception of the first seven miles after the start and about ten miles crossing the Salinas Valley.

STAGE 4
SAN JOSE/MORGAN HILL
TIME TRIAL

The Time Trial course had the Start/Finish in Morgan Hill and was a 21.6 mile, 34.7 KM, loop through the foothills that touched the southern edge of San Jose. While it wasn't flat, it had only one minor climb that wasn't worthy of any classification. Tejay VanGarderen (BMC Racing) started the day in 8th place, exactly one minute behind Tour Leader Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Team Sky) but rode so strong he bettered Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Team Sky) by 1 minute, 23 seconds to end the day as the new Tour Leader with a 23 second lead over Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Team Sky) who managed to hold onto Second place overall.

STOCKTON TO ELK GROVE

The Stage from Stockton to Elk Grove was a nearly flat course with just one minor Category 3 climb when the course touched the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains east of Lodi. It was a fast 109.4 mile, 176KM, course and the Podium was the same as Stage 1 as Fernando Gaviria Rendon (Quick-Step Floors) crossed the Finish first after 4 hours, 4 minutes and 34 seconds, an average speed of 26.84MPH, 46.18KMH.

STAGE 6
FOLSOM TO SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

The 122.1 mile, 196.5KM, course for this Stage was essentially an up-hill climb all the way from the Start to the Finish. It had seven catagorized climbs as compared to the Queen Stage, Stage 2, which only had five and was just rolling terrain for the first 90 miles or so. But Stage 2 was designated the Queen Stage (most difficult/demanding) most likely due to the final climb to the Finish which was the hardest climb of the Tour being 7.5 miles, 12KM, at an 8% grade, an HC designation. One unique aspect of Stage 6 is that for about 20 miles, 32 KM, near the end, the course ventured into Nevada before coming back into California just 2.8 miles, 4 KM, from the Finish.

Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Team Sky), who won Stage 2 to take the Yellow Jersey, was able to again dominate on the final major climb that ended 6.5 miles, 10.5 KM, from the finish and was able to hold a 1 minute 28 second lead over Adam Yates (Mitchelton - Scott) who came in Second. Tejay VanGarderen (BMC Racing) 'blew up' in the final climbs and was unable to stay close enough to Egan Arley Bernal Gomez (Team Sky) to hold onto his overall lead which was 23 seconds. VanGarderen finished seventh, 1 minute 38 seconds back.

STAGE 7
SACRAMENTO
and the AWARDS CEREMONY

The last Stage of the Tour was in Sacramento and was 90.7 miles, 146 KM, long. The course initially headed North/West to Woodland, then West across the Central Valley to the foothills of the Rocky Ridge, where it turned South, parallel to 505, headed to Winters. After Winters the course headed East-North/East winding it's way through the Central Valley to Woodland where it followed a return path almost identical to the course when it headed North/West. After returning to the Capitol area the course made three laps in the neighborhoods around the Capitol before the finish. While the Men's race was running the Woman's race was staged around the Capitol, Criterium style, on the same course as the final laps the Men's race would follow.

The course for Stage 7 was essentially flat with nothing to change the King of the Mountain contest which was won by Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo). There were two intermediate Sprints, one in Winters and one on the finish of the first lap around the Capital near the end of the race. Fernando Gavira Rendon (Quick-Step Floors) won the Stage by inches over Maximilian Richard Walscheid (Team Sunweb) to capture his third Stage victory in the Tour.
