THINGS, 2016 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA

These are photographs of the 2016 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA Professional Bicycle Race. This was the race's eleventh edition with eighteen racing Teams, each with eight riders. The Tour also raced mainly from south to north which was the second time in the Tour's history that it has done so.

This year there was also a four Stage Woman's Tour, with eighteen teams, that was recognized as a UCI Woman's World Tour Race. This Tour occurred in essentially the same cities/areas as the last four Stages of the Men's Tour, but over different courses except for the Time Trial in Folsom. While the Men's Time Trial was an individual event the Women's was a Team Time Trial. There are a few photographs of the Women's events included in this collection.

At the bottom of these photographs are links to the collections from the 2008 through 2015 AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA collections.

If you would like to investigate purchasing rights to any of these photographs, the instructions you need are on the main STOCK page linked to below. There are many more photographs of the Tour available, due to time constraints only a few of the best are presented here. If you would like another photo of the race or the racers just ask and I will investigate.

STAGE 1, SAN DIEGO

Stage 1 of the race both started and finished in San Diego. The route went almost 109 miles through southern San Diego County, with two intermediate Point Sprints and one Class 1 rated climb. It was mainly a relatively flat Stage, and since the climb was about half way through the Stage, would end in a mass sprint finish.

Last years Champion, and current UCI World Champion, Peter Sagan, Tinkoff, won the Stage and became the Overall Leader, thus would wear the Leaders Jersey in Stage 2. This win was Peter's fourteenth Stage win, and overall Stage win leader, in the Tour of California's running statistics.

STAGE 2, SOUTH PASADENA
TO SANTA CLARITA

This Stage of the Tour covered 92 miles which were mainly in the Angeles National forest. There were four categorized climbs, three were a Class 2 and one was a Class 1, and two intermediate Points Sprints. There was an early breakaway of 22 riders that didn't last, it was caught by the Peloton before the first King of the Mountain climb, the Class 1 up to the summit on Angeles Crest Highway, about 15.6 miles into the Stage.

At about 24 miles into the Stage a new breakaway formed with four Racers, including Benjamin King, Cannondale Pro Cycling Team. This breakaway eventually was reduced to just two Racers with 5 miles to go, Benjamin King and Evan Huffman, Rally Cycling. These two Racers were able to hold off the Peloton for the rest of the Stage and Benjamin King won the Stage eight seconds ahead of the Peloton.

STAGE 3, THOUSAND OAKS
TO SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

Stage 3, was the Queens Stage of the 2016 Tour, ending at the summit of the Class HC climb up Gibraltar Road just outside Santa Barbara. The Stage started at the Amgen headquarters in Thousand Oaks and went through the Santa Monica Mountains, where there were two rated climbs, a Class 3 and a Class 2, before following the coast north.

After a long, mainly flat, route that followed the coast there was a small deviation through the mountains with a Class 3 climb about 29 miles from the finish. After that climb it was back down to the coast and mainly flat again until the start of the Class HC climb that started on the approach to, and then finished at the summit of, Gibraltar Road. The total length of this climb was 7.8 miles with an average grade of 8%. This brutal climb took it's toll on the Racers and splintered the Peloton into several groups. Julian Alaphilippe, Etixx - Quick-Step, managed to hold a strong, steady pace, and won the Stage 15 seconds ahead of Peter Stetina, Trek - Segafredo. Due to the rest of the Racers splintering into many groups, Julian took the lead of the Tour. It was nearly 23 minutes before the last of the Racers made it to the Finish.

STAGE 4, MORRO BAY
TO LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY

This Stage was the longest of the 2016 Tour at 134.8 miles. This was also a first in that it went along the famous coastal route of Highway 1 through Big Sur northward, all other times the Tour has been on this road it has gone southward. Once near the finish the course went inland along Carmel Valley Road, making the last 18 miles a short tour through the Santa Lucia Range, giving the route a Class 2 climb 5 miles from the finish which also had a Class 3 climb once inside the Laguna Seca property. Along Highway 1 there were two intermediate Points Sprints and three Class 3 climbs for a total of five rated Points Climbs total along the route.

Even though this Stage was after the gueling Queens Stage, and going south to north had to deal with headwinds along most of the route, the Racers were able to make it to the finish in 5:16:33 hours, an average speed of 25.7mph. The Peloton had broken up but had three large groups within about a minutes time at the finish. The finish came down to a large sprint with 12 racers and was won by Peter Sagan, Tinkoff. This was Peter's fifteenth win in the history of the Tour, and his last first place finish in 2016.

STAGE 5, LODI TO
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

This Stage of the Tour was essentially one long climb from the Central Valley to Lake Tahoe. It was the second longest Stage at 132.4 miles, just 2.4 miles shorter than Stage 4 the day before. It was also the Stage with the greatest overall climbing at 13,300 feet, more climbing than the Queen Stage which only had 8,700 feet of climbing. But since it climbed for nearly the entire route the average grade was relatively easy and there were no serious climbs, only three rated climes, two Class 2 and one Class 3.

As usually happens in these Stages, a large breakaway formed about 14 miles into the race. The breakaway stayed steady for most of the race, but the gain in altitude and the long previous Stage took it's toll on the Racers, and slowly the breakaway whittled down to just three riders with about 20 miles to go. The three Racers remained in the lead, and in the final charge to the finish Toms Skujins, Cannondale Pro Cycling Team, won the Stage.

Lake Tahoe was also the first Stage of the Woman's Tour. The course for this Stage went all the way around Lake Tahoe, for a 72.7 mile race with one Points Sprint and two rated Climbs, one early in the Stage and one to the Finish. Megan Guarnier, Boels - Dolmans Cycling Team, won the first Climb, the Sprint, and the Climb to the Finish, thus taking the lead in all the individual classifications except Best Young Rider. STAGE 6, FOLSOM TIME TRIAL

The Time Trial course of this years race was almost identical to the course used in 2014, the year Bradley Wiggins, Team Wiggins, won the Stage about one minutes faster than the second place finisher, and built an overall lead he held onto to win the Tour. Unlike in 2014, when the Time Trial was the second Stage, this year the Time Trial was the more conventional sixth Stage. The route was the same for both the Men's and Women's Tour's.

The course of the Time Trial was essentially an out-and-back, with the only major variation being the locations of the Start and Finish. The course was an almost flat 6.3 miles, with slight climbing to the turn-around which was about 180 feet higher in elevation than the Start/Finish. On the way back, though, the slight climb turned into a slight decent. The total length of the Time Trial was 12.6 miles. Rohan Dennis, BMC Racing Team, the Australian National Time Trial Champion, won the Stage in 24:16.04 minutes, making for an average speed of 31.15mph.

This section has photographs of the Women's Team that won the Stage, Twenty16 Bikerider, Rohan Dennis, BMC Racing Team, Men's winner of the Stage, the Men's Tour Jersey Wearers racing the Stage. Also there is a photo of Bradley Wiggins, Team Wiggins, who suffered from a broken aero-bar and was unable to hold form and subsequently suffered severely in his time and a photo of Laurens Ten Dam, Team Giant-Alpecin, that shows the concentration of the Racers during this Stage. The full collection of photographs of this Stage does have at least one photograph of every Women's Team and Men's Racer that was in Stage 6. STAGE 7, SANTA ROSA

The Seventh Stage both started and ended in Santa Rosa, with the 109 mile course taking the Racers through the forests and along the Coast on Highway 1 for the second time this Tour. The majority of the course was through rolling and hilly sections through the forest but also along the coast, which gave the Stage six rated Climbs, one Class one, two Class 2 and three Class three, the most in a single Stage of the 2016 Tour. In classic fashion a large breakaway formed and lead for most of the Stage.

The final 20 miles or so of the course was essentially flat, which included four finish laps around Downtown Santa Rosa. This allowed the front Peloton to catch the breakaway and regroup. The Peloton had settled into two groups as the Stage progrssed, a front group of the faster, less fatigued, Racers and a rear group of the Racers who were feeing the affects of the previous six days of racing. The finish ended up being a mass sprint of the most promising Racers, the second group finished about 26 minutes behind. Alexander Kristoff, Team Katusha, won the Stage in a photo finish with Peter Sagan, Tinkoff, who come in second by about one inch.

STAGE 8, SACRAMENTO
and the AWARDS CEREMONY

While Sacramento has hosted several Stages of previous Tour of California's, including two Overall Starts, 2016 was the first year Sacramento was the last Stage of the Tour. The course was essentially flat, both starting and ending in Sacramento, and following a narrow loop south and then north near the Sacramento River, making for a very fast 85.7 miles. There were two Points Sprints in this Stage, one 56.5 miles into the Stage in Clarksburg, and one the first time the Racers crossed the Finish line in Sacramento. The course made three subsequent laps around the Capital before the Stage and Tour ended the fourth time the Racers crossed the finish.

Since Stage 8 was mainly flat the Racers were able to keep up a very fast pace, and it ended in the typical mass sprint. A small breakaway had formed and kept it's lead until the laps around the Capital, but was eventually caught and Mark Cavendish, Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, won the Stage in 3:01:12, an average speed of about 28.6mph. During the Awards Ceremony the Awards for both the Men's Tour and Womens's Tour were combined.
